If you want to get to the coveted number one position on Google for your chosen keyword or keyword phrase, you'll need more than luck. You'll need a strong understanding of search engine optimization related techniques. You can find many of these techniques for free but it could take you quite some time to separate fact from fantasy. Reaching the top of any search engine requires that you apply the methods used by today's top ranked websites. There are a variety of techniques that are applied to top ranking sites and many that wont improve your ranking a single position. I have focused my time experimenting and determining which techniques work the best and here they are. Researching keywords comes first. Do you wonder how you're going to reach the number one position? The answer is directly correlated to what keywords you are trying to rank out on top for and how competitive they are. Said another way, if you are trying to rank well for a term that every one else is trying to rank out on top for, you have a long hard road ahead of you. On the other hand, if you are trying to rank well for a term with little competition, your odds of achieving search engine success go up significantly. Meta Tags are extremely important. So many people think that meta tags no longer hold any weight. The truth is that meta tags are just one of many factors affecting search engine rankings. That being said these tags are needed to prove to web site spiders that your content is consistent with your tags. Also, consider that meta tags drive how your search listing appears in search results. You want to provide something that is helpful and encourages users to click through to your website. Don't make browsers wait for your site to load. Google and other major search engines like Yahoo! know how long it takes for your web site to load. Sites that load more quickly than others get preference in search engine results. Pay particular attention to how quickly your site loads and you'll have a distinct advantage over your competition. Reduce image size, minimize page elements, and your site will pass with flying colors. Start building links to your site. If you want to achieve top rankings, others will have to vote for your website. Google has consolidated the voting process into a single number called Google page rank. The algorithm takes a number of factors into consideration but is largely dependent on the value of sites linking into yours. The way to improve this number is by having larger, more authoritative sites linking to you. Begin an effort to attract one way links and watch your ranking dramatically improve. The majority of search engines will never reveal their true criteria for evaluating web sites and generating rankings. We do know however what top web sites have in common when we analyze the number one ranked sites across disciplines. As a result search engine optimization best practices have come to the forefront and can be applied to virtually any website or blog. About the Author: Seeking the #1 ranking for your web site?
